In today’s political climate there are two completely divided sides who often cannot find common ground on anything. The #WalkAway movement was organized by Brandon Straka, a once dedicated democrat party member. In recent protests and political arguments, Straka describes how the party he was once proud to be a part of has let him down. He is disappointed how extreme people in his party have went, just to fight against the republican party. He urges people who feel like him to walk away from the democratic party. He explains how he is fed up with how people have been brainwashed or convinced to be extreme leftists, often demonstrating cruel behavior that is unacceptable. He is not in any way telling people to leave the democratic party and join the republican party. I believe his same argument could even be made to republican members who feel as though their party has also lost sense of their values and many people are becoming extreme rightest. The bottom line is that violence is unacceptable, and both sides have shown acts of violence against one another.
I think Brandon Straka’s video has a powerful message, and it really helped me learn the purpose behind this movement. I really hope it isn’t fake, but could not find credible sources to answer this debate. The fact that he left the democratic party for the same reasons he joined it is terrifying. He is not alone, many people feel this way about their parties, republicans included. There seems to not be a place for a lot of us to feel comfortable. Maybe, this will be the movement to make the cultural shift our country is in dire need of. We need a new and improved political system where people feel like they are acknowledged, a system where we don’t fear corruption, a system that refuses the use of violence and hate.
I can why people would assume this movement was secretly created to destroy the democrat party and that Straka was never a democrat. However, I do not think this movement was spread by Russian bots or started by the republicans. And if I am wrong, and Straka did work with the republican party to create this movement, I still think we can gain an important message from this. I truly believe this is a larger social issue about our political system that needs to be addressed. No political party is doing good in our current system. It has become two divided sides full of extremists. As someone who does not feel super knowledgeable about politics, I can confidently say that I don’t find myself to belong to any party. I feel confused, overwhelmed, and often sometimes pressured by both sides. I can’t believe anything I read, since I do not know whether it is credible or not. Even my family seems to be divided on issues, making my views even more blurred. Ultimately, I think the #WalkAway movement will continue to grow, I hope with the right intentions. And I hope that this is a wake up call to both democrats and republicans. We need to be united, or we will be at risk of falling apart even more so than we feel now.
